Lake Tahoe is a national treasure that was discovered in 1844 by explorers John Fremont and Kit Carson. The Washoes, native indians in the area, name for Lake Tahoe is Da-ow-a-ga or edge of the lake. The explorers of the time changed the pronunciation to Tahoe. The lake had a few other names before finally receiving Lake Tahoe as its offical name in 1945. In the 1950's homes were accessable year round when adequate snow plowing began. The 1960 Winter Olympics brought national attention to Lake Tahoe and real estate boom began.

Lake Tahoe has a surface elevation of 6229 ft. It is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and has 72 miles of shoreline. It has a surface area of 193 square miles and an average depth of over 900 feet, with a maximum depth of 1645 feet. The Lake holds 37 trillon gallons of water, enough to cover the state of California to a depth of 14 inches. Below an average depth of 600 feet, water temperature is a constant 39F. During July and August surface temperature can reach 68F. During winter surface temperature is usually 41F.
